In a bit of a lull. A lull is a soft thing.

As part of Paradise Works Open Studios 2024, Sarah Blaszczok and Lauren Steeper invited fellow artists - and mothers - Caitlin Akers, Linda Hemmersbach and Sophie Lee to show work alongside them in LULL.

The exhibition responded directly and inadvertently to our experience of motherhood, and a shared goal of sustaining an art practice while raising young children.

Through accepting interruption, working in new media and making peace with the unfinished, each of us has found ways to create in the lulls between the demands of caregiving. Limitation of time is at play here, as well as space. The space to imagine, to lay down paper or print, the space to finish a thought or a conversation.

In LULL we began a new conversation by placing our work next to one another’s. Initiating a dialogue between the works and contributing to the current conversation about the importance of the artist mother as a cultural figure.

Twisting Heads, Publication and Workshops, May 2023
In May 2023 I was commissioned to create a publication and to deliver a series of bookbinding workshops for Dawes Twineworks, the UK’s only surviving Victorian twineworks, for Od Arts Festival in East and West Coker in Somerset.

Spooling, twisting, braiding, twine walk, rope walk, twisting heads, fast and loose – the process and machinery used in traditional twine making has a unique language that evokes movement. Taking this as a starting point my bookbinding workshops provided an opportunity to learn and enjoy slow and productive movement, and to reflect on the industrial history of the twineworks whilst making. We used original twine from Dawes to create a series of handcrafted books. The publication, entitled ‘Twisting Heads’ invites readers to follow a series of simple exercises in movement, twisting and twine walking. I designed, printed and bound the book myself and it was made by printing with original twine from Dawes - these prints were adapted into the pages of the book then risograph printed in brown and gold on hemp paper as a nod to the traditional materials used in twine making. The book was a limited edition of 500.

@MIF_Memory is a Twitter Bot that generated random tweets using bits from past and present Manchester International Festival (MIF) programmes. Over the course of the 2019 Manchester International Festival and beyond @MIF_Memory churned out a new tweet every three hours. It generated it’s final tweet on 6th April 2023 when Twitter ended all large scape API usage.

The bot is a response to Rafeal Lozano-Hemmer's MIF19 installation 'Atmospheric Memory' which is inspired by computer pioneer Charles Babbage's theory that voices from the past still linger in the air. The bot reflects on past festivals but it is also a playful critique on the language that MIF uses to describe art works and performances. The bots were written in Tracery, a tool for writing generative grammars developed by Kate Compton via

v buckenham’s site Cheap Bots Done Quick.

Setting up in Outpost in Fortuneswell I created a pop up, open access, print and bookbinding workshop for festival goers and Islanders. I brought along a Risograph Printer, an Adana press for Letterpress printing, some wood type, ink, rollers, bookbinding tools and lots of recycled paper! Over the course of the festival I ran workshops for local groups such as Island Community Action, drop in workshops for families and an evening zine making workshop. The workshops focused on the festival theme of ‘This Land’ looking at land rights, envionmental issues and what it is like to live on the unique Island of Portland.
The Risograph printer now has a permanent home on the Island at Outpost with b.side who will be using for all their printing needs.
